Sports Guards

Summer is sadly winding down and fall and winter are on their way with new seasons of sports just beginning. With the start of any new sport season it is important to remember that with all the protective body gear needed to keep ourselves and our kids safe, mouth guards are just as necessary. And, like any piece of equipement, it needs to be properly fitted and replaced on a regular basis. There are many types of sports guards to choose from including a custom made guard.

Custom mouth guards are made by taking an impression of the wearers teeth. From that impression a model is formed and from that a custom guard is created out of a pliable plastic. A custom guard ensures a tight but comfortable fitting guard that protects not only the teeth but lips, gums and cheeks as well. Sports guards also have the added bonus of protecting the jarring forces of teeth to teeth contact, which means reduced head trauma and concussions.

A very simple yet very important piece of equipement. Come in and discuss the best guard for your mouth and your sport. Get yours made, specifically for you, by making an appointment at our office at (705) 721-1122.

Good Oral Health: The “check up”
It has long been established that good oral health and overall health and well being have been intertwined. However more and more studies are showing the reasons why and helping to put this subject out into the general public. A regular cleaning for the removal of bacteria is necessary to help combat not only decay and halitosis (bad breath), but also prevent poor heart health and help with healthy pregnancies.* A regular maintenance appointment with our team of dentists and dental hygienists will not only keep your smile white, but clean and healthy too. Ask our reception team to book your regular appointment today, and put your health first!

Healthy Little Smiles

There is nothing better than the perfect smile of a small child. Many parents who visit our office have many questions about how to keep their childs newly erupted teeth clean and healthy. Childrens teeth generally begin to erupt around 5 months of age with the bottom front teeth showing up first and will continue to arrive until all 20 teeth are present at around 24 months old.

A great beginning is the best way to protect this healthy smile. Often cleaning a babys’ mouth with a wet wash cloth is recommended even before any teeth can be seen. Besides keeping their mouth clean, this will also help to accustom both parents and child to healthy habits. Once a baby starts teething the cooling cloth on their gums will also help soothe some discomfort.

Once teeth are present a toothbrush made specifically with a handle for a grownups hand, but small soft bristles made for a baby’s mouth, is ideal. This toothbrush used with only water, will be a great next step in oral care. By removing any food or milk from the childs teeth and surrounding tissue good habits are being formed and as the remaining teeth erupt cavity prevention has already begun. These first baby teeth are an important part of a childs overall health. The baby teeth are there for proper ability tohelp a child to learn how to chew and form words, and later to guide the adult teeth into into the proper position. Often a good first visit with the dental team will help to reach these goals. Ideally a child should be seen at 3 years old, as the baby or primary teeth are all erupted and a child is old enough to sit for a comfortable amount of time. At this appointment a cleaning can be done with any help in oral care instruction that may be necessary and the dentist can assess the teeth and help make their first visit a positive one to help build a trusting relationship that will last a lifetime. If however there is a concern or question children can be seen at any age.

We are happy to help make a healthy little smile shine. Bring your child in for their first visit today!

Teeth Whitening

A question quite frequently asked by people is regarding teeth whitening. There are a number of over-the-counter methods that can be used but often have not been as thoroughly tested or researched as ones available at your dental office. A quick visit to your dental professional and they can thoroughly assess the type of staining present and decide a method of whitening most suitable for your teeth. Most people have some form of discoloration even if they aren’t heavy smokers or coffee drinkers. However, everyone deserves to have a beautiful healthy white smile.
Having a beautiful confident smile can be a very easy process. Currently we at Mapleview Family Dentistry have 2 types of whitening to offer to our clients. The most commonly used is the take-home REV system. This is a peroxide based gel that is worn on the teeth for up to 14 days for only 15 minutes a day. The reason it is so popular is the ease of use and our custom fit trays that allow for safe, reliable teeth whitening *. All clients are shown how to properly wear and use their trays and then it’s just a matter of taking it home and seeing the results for yourself
The second option is the ZOOM laser whitening system. This is an in-office procedure that lasts about an hour and a half and includes the Rev take-home system as a take home touch up kit. This option is often used by people who put a high premium on their time and find the superior whitening often received by the laser system the best option.
If you decide to come in and ZOOM your smile with us, or REV it up at home, a clean white smile is just a visit away. Ask our knowledgeable staff about maximizing your smile potential today!

Wisdom Teeth

Wisdom teeth are not just the bane of teenagers. Though most third molars or “”wisdom teeth” make their appearance in the mouths of teenagers, they are often unpredictable and can seem dormant and then begin to erupt later in life. With most clients their wisdom teeth are monitored on a regular basis during routine dental hygiene visits. Often checking visually is all that is required, but at a certain point in age or eruption of teeth a panoramic radiograph or x-ray to check on the movement and growth of these teeth becomes necessary.*

At this point a thorough consultation with the dentist may be needed to decide on a course of treatment that will include everything from if extraction is necessary to pain management post extraction. There are a number of options to consider including whether or not it can be done with local anesthetic or while “asleep”, the time it will take to do the procedure, to the amount of time necessary for recovery.

While the mere mention of having a tooth removed may make most people uncomfortable, a good plan made in conjunction with your “wise” and trusted dental team will make it easier to make the best decision for your situation.
